Gluten Free Living
For our customers with wheat allergies and celiac disease, Open Harvest carries a large selection of gluten- and wheat-free foods to accommodate your diet, and make your life easier and more enjoyable. Around the store, these items will be marked by a purple "Gluten Free" tag, next to the product's regular shelf/ price tag. Please always read the product labels! Some items are processed in facilities that also produce foods containing gluten.
Celiac disease (CD) is a genetic disorder. In people with CD, eating certain types of protein, called gluten, sets off an autoimmune response that causes damage to the small intestine. This, in turn, causes the small intestine to lose its ability to absorb the nutrients found in food, leading to malnutrition and a variety of other complications. The Open Harvest bakery uses organic ingredients whenever possible. Gluten-free rice bread is available fresh every Wednesday and Saturday after 3:00 p.m. We also strive to keep plain and favored rice breads stocked in our freezer section. Gluten-free muffns are baked on Saturday. We also bake chocolate fudge rice brownies, coconut macaroons, plain or with chocolate chips, and Bumble Babies, a peanut butter and honey confection with lots of seeds and nuts! The Open Harvest bakery accepts special orders for all products. Please give at least one week's notice when ordering.
Our deli makes many products without gluten or wheat. All our ingredients are listed. Ask our staff for details. Please note: our kitchen facilities also produce foods that contain gluten. Meat, fish and poultry are naturally gluten-free. However during processing, additional ingredients containing gluten may be added. Shelton's turkey franks & turkey sausage patties are gluten free. There are other options available in the Meat & Seafood department. Check with a department staff member for additional information!
The Vitamin, Health & Beauty Department carries a vast selection of gluten-free products. The full line of Pioneer products is gluten free. Ask a vitamin department staff member for more information!
