Welcome to our Co-op

Welcome to Open Harvest Co-op Grocery!

We are excited to have you as an essential piece of Open Harvest Co-op Grocery. Your investment in Open Harvest provides direct support to consumer education, local producers, responsible agriculture, the local economy, and the overall health of the Lincoln community. When shopping, please proudly show your owner card; this will help us ensure that you receive your owner benefits.

Your new equity investment means ownership in a local business that first opened in 1975. Since then, our ownership has grown to more than 2,800 members. As an active owner of the co-op, you will receive several benefits, as outlined in this e-mail.

We are dedicated to supporting our local farmers and ranchers and connecting our community with their food sources. Many of our products are sourced from local ranchers, farmers, and producers. In fact last year, over 27% of everything we sold last year came from a local food producer or vendor. We are committed to providing a wide assortment of grocery, produce, wellness, and prepared foods that meet your needs and budget. Everyone is welcome to shop at the Co-op and we encourage you to tell your friends what you love about your store!

If you have any questions about your investment in Open Harvest, please do not hesitate to contact us at harvest@openharvest.coop. Thank you again for supporting your local co-op!

Sincerely,
The Open Harvest Team

The 7 Co-op Principles

Like all cooperatives, Open Harvest operates under the following guiding principles.

Voluntary and Open Membership

We are a voluntary organization, open to all persons able to use their services and willing to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political, or religious discrimination.

Democratic Member Control

We are a democratic organization controlled by our members, who actively participate in setting their policies and making decisions. Men and women serving as elected representatives are accountable to the membership.

Members’ Economic Participation

Members contribute equitably to, and democratically control, the capital of the cooperative. The economic benefits of a cooperative operation are returned to the members, reinvested in the co-op, or used to provide member services.

Autonomy and Independence

Cooperatives are autonomous, self-help organizations controlled by their members. If they enter into agreements, they do so on terms that ensure democratic control by their members and maintain their cooperative autonomy.

Education, Training and Information

Cooperatives provide education and training for their members, elected representatives, managers and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their cooperatives. They inform the general public about the nature and benefits of cooperation.

Cooperation Among Cooperatives

Cooperatives serve their members most effectively and strengthen the cooperative movement by working together through local, national, regional and international structures.

Concern for Community

While focusing on member needs, cooperatives work for the sustainable development of their communities through policies approved by their members.

Our Board of Directors

Open Harvest’s Board of Directors is comprised of up to nine elected co-op owners who serve the co-op for three-year terms. The board meets monthly on the first Wednesday of the month, at 6:00 p.m via Zoom. Co-op owners are welcome to join and your advance RSVP is politely requested.

Open Harvest’s Board of Directors uses a formal system known as policy governance to establish a structure for its work. The Policy Register is the document which sets out the details of how we apply policy governance. The Register describes the roles and responsibilities of the Board, and the methods it uses to oversee the co-op. This type of governance uses policies to guide the General Manager (GM) to progress towards stated goals (Ends) of the co-op while staying within established boundaries. Through reports from the General Manager, external reports, and the board’s internal monitoring, policies and goals are evaluated and updated regularly.
